1. The Lord of the Rings novels are written as if translated to English. Westron was the common tongue of Middle-Earth, from which the English version was "translated."
2. In 1999, a Russian author wrote a version of The Lord of the Rings from Sauron's perspective, depicting Mordor as a land of peace, and the other lands of Middle-Earth as the antagonists.
3. Tolkien himself said that in a fight, if Gandalf had the Ring and battled Sauron, Gandalf would win.
4. Gandalf and Sauron are each the same type of creature--a Maia, which is a sort of lesser angel in the mythology of Middle Earth.
5. After the end of the books, Legolas sails across the sea to Valinor and takes Gimli to paradise with him.
