All right, well, you readers of my blog know by now that I am participating in NaNoWriMo, and it's Weird Wednesday, so I thought, "Why not combine Weird Wednesday with NaNoWriMo?" So, without further ado, here are five facts about NaNoWriMo.
1. Mr. Ian Woon is an anagram of the word "NaNoWriMo," and has been included in many NaNoWriMo novels as a tribute to NaNoWriMo. Mr. Ian Woon was created in the very early years of NaNoWriMo, though no one is sure exactly when, because by the time NaNoWriMo had forums, the character had already been invented, so there is no record of who created him and when.
2. The Traveling Shovel of Death appeared in many NaNo novels beginning around 2005. The Traveling Shovel of Death is basically an all-purpose plot tool for use whenever a novelist gets stuck: if you can't write anything, have one of your characters be killed by a shovel. Since so many people used the plot device, it got named "The Traveling Shovel of Death."
3. Plot Bunnies are a very famous part of NaNoWriMo. These refer to plot ideas that you just can't get out of your head until you've written them into your novel. These amazing furballs of inspiration are considered the best part of NaNoWriMo by many people.
4. Guilt Monkeys are almost like Plot Bunnies' meaner counterpart. They are the nagging guilt that gnaws at you during NaNoWriMo, stooping low and ashaming you until you've succumbed and written your daily quota.
5. NaNoWriMo has been around for fifteen years now. It's 9 months younger than me, but (I'll admit) way cooler than me.
